Welcome Parents!

Below are some links which provide information pertinent to you as parents of young readers and authors. Also, the websites accessible in the "Activity Corner" are reviewed here, so that you may help direct your child's exploration.

Why Writing Workshop?-I have provided an explanation of what writing workshop is, and how it will help your daughter to not only be a successful author, but also to take pride in her work, and know that it is valued.

Useful websites:

www.starfall.com- This site is great for readers of all levels, from beginning to advanced. Maneuvering the site is also quite kid-friendly, so let them at it! There are several books online to read, stories that are read to the reader, and even many free downloads!

www.magickeys.com/books- This site seems less kid-friendly at first, but has several books online to view ranging from emergent reader to advanced, and even young adult (for an older sibling, perhaps). The top of the page advertises books and programs for sale, but if you scroll down a bit, you'll see the list of books available for free!

www.bookhive.org- Here is where children can become an author. You'll need to sign them up, creating a username and password-but it is completely free! Next , the child chooses six pictures, and writes captions for them. You can also download coloring pages, hear a story read to you, and find synopsis of books on a variety of topics. Great for the parent AND the child!

www.thereadingtub.com- This site provides reviews for thousands of children's books!

www.quia.com/pages/buchanan.html- I will use this site to post games and activities to help the girls practice their spelling words each week, have fun with math facts, or learn new vocabulary.
